The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of the Sunshine Coast and Gympie region expressed the need for a Health Service that would deliver culturally appropriate health care services. Due to the challenges associated with providing health care services to a population of more than 7000 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members across an area of approximately 7000sq kilometres, transport/access was always going to be a key factor.
After a great deal of consultation with Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) the NCACCH Brokerage Model was developed to deliver Indigenous health services in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.
This unique Brokerage system is the result of strategies developed to address identified health needs within funding constraints and provide access to primary health care services via mainstream services equal to the general middle class non-Indigenous population.
This innovative approach focuses on cost-effectiveness, efficiency, professionalism, culturally appropriateness and partnerships. This first and very successful Brokerage Model has gained national recognition for being a leader in the delivery of primary health care.
